A Seasonal Twist on the Classic Moscow Mule

The Frozen Thomcord Grape Mule is a bold and refreshing take on the classic Moscow Mule cocktail. Instead of relying on ice cubes that water down the flavor, this vodka cocktail recipe uses blended and strained Thomcord or Concord grapes that are frozen into cubes. The frozen grape base creates a smooth and slushy texture while adding natural sweetness and vibrant fruit character. This fall cocktail is perfect for late summer and autumn when grapes are at their peak, offering a seasonal alternative to the standard citrus and ginger forward mule.

Why Use Thomcord or Concord Grapes

Thomcord and Concord grapes have distinct flavor that combines sweetness with slightly tart finish. Their skins are full of natural pigments that give the cocktail a rich purple color, and their juice carries aromatic notes that pair beautifully with lime and ginger. Freezing the strained juice enhances this intensity, allowing the grape character to shine without being diluted. If you cannot find Thomcord grapes, Concord grapes make an excellent substitute with similar flavor profile for this frozen cocktail recipe.

The Balance of Vodka, Lime, and Ginger Beer

Every mule cocktail is built on the balance between spirit, citrus, and ginger beer. In this frozen mule variation, the grape base adds fruity middle note that ties everything together. Vodka provides clean backbone, while fresh lime juice brightens the drink and ginger beer adds spice and effervescence. The result is a layered cocktail that is fruity, tangy, and refreshing with just enough bite.

How to Make a Frozen Grape Mule

The process begins with blending and straining fresh grapes to remove skins and seeds. The juice is then frozen in ice cube trays. Once frozen, the grape cubes are blended with vodka and lime juice until smooth and slushy. Ginger beer is added last to maintain its carbonation, creating a frothy top that makes the drink feel lively and refreshing. Garnishes like frozen grapes or a lime wheel complete the presentation of this fall cocktail recipe.

Perfect Cocktail for Entertaining

This Frozen Grape Mule is a showstopper for gatherings, whether served in copper mugs or clear glasses that display its jewel like color. It works beautifully as a signature cocktail for fall dinners, harvest celebrations, or even as a refreshing drink for summer evenings. The frozen grape base can be made ahead, making this cocktail an efficient choice for hosting. With its seasonal fruit and familiar mule profile, it bridges the gap between classic cocktail lovers and adventurous drinkers looking for unique cocktail recipes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Thomcord grapes

  • 2 ounces vodka

  • 1 lime, juiced

  • 4 ounces ginger beer

  • 1 ounce honey

  • for garnish, frozen Thomcord grapes

Directions

  • Prepare the Grapes: Place the grapes in a blender and blend until completely smooth. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, pressing to extract as much juice as possible. Discard the solids.
  • Freeze the Base: Pour the strained grape juice into ice cube trays or popsicle molds. Freeze until solid, at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Blend the Drink: Once frozen, place the grape cubes in a blender with the vodka, lime juice, and honey. Blend until smooth and slushy.
  • Add the Ginger Beer: Pour the blended grape mixture into a chilled glass. Top with ginger beer and stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish and Serve: Garnish with a few frozen grapes or a lime wheel. Serve immediately with a straw or spoon.

Notes

  • If you want to make this mule non-alcoholic, simply leave the vodka out. You will still get the spice of ginger and the depth of fresh grape puree without the alcohol. It drinks like a sparkling grape soda with a kick of lime and makes an excellent option for any guest.
