Hot Honey Broccoli Gruyere Flatbread

Jump to Recipe

The Hot Honey Broccoli Gruyere Flatbread is a delightful culinary experience. It combines the rich flavors of melted Gruyere cheese and broccoli with a special touch—hot honey and a tangy balsamic glaze. This flatbread presents a unique blend of tastes, with crispy golden pizza dough as the perfect base for the delicious toppings.

The flavor journey starts with a hot honey mixture that perfectly balances sweetness and heat. In a saucepan, honey, extra virgin olive oil, and red pepper flakes are gently heated, allowing the pepper flakes to infuse into the honey’s sweetness. This hot honey creates a zesty, mildly spicy base that envelops the pizza dough with a rich flavor profile.

In this flatbread, broccoli shines, offering flavor and nutritional perks. After a quick blanch in salted water, it becomes tender while staying bright green, maintaining a slight crunch even post-baking. The earthy notes of the broccoli perfectly complement the cheese’s richness and the sweet heat of the honey. Beyond adding texture, broccoli introduces a healthy green aspect, elevating this flatbread to a guilt-free delight.

On top of the broccoli, there is a generous sprinkling of Gruyere cheese. Known for its nutty, slightly salty flavor and superior melting quality, Gruyere cheese elevates this flatbread with a distinct richness. As the flatbread bakes, the Gruyere melts into a bubbly, golden layer that perfectly complements the other elements. Its creaminess balances the heat from the hot honey, and its deep flavor enhances the overall experience.

The finishing flourish is the balsamic glaze. This sweet and tangy drizzle is created by simmering balsamic vinegar with brown sugar until it transforms into a thick, rich syrup. After removing the flatbread from the oven, the glaze is drizzled on top, enhancing each bite with added complexity. Its acidity balances the cheese’s richness and the honey’s sweetness, resulting in a refined mix of flavors.

Whether made as an appetizer for a gathering or a satisfying meal, the Hot Honey Broccoli Gruyere Flatbread stands out for its innovative combination of spicy, sweet, and savory elements. It’s a modern take on a flatbread that combines Italian-inspired pizza with French Gruyere cheese and American influences like hot honey and balsamic glaze, resulting in a truly memorable dish.

The Hot Honey Broccoli Gruyere Flatbread combines crispy pizza dough with spicy hot honey, tender broccoli, and melted Gruyere cheese, finished with a tangy balsamic glaze. This fusion dish perfectly balances sweet, savory, and spicy flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 ball of pizza dough, store-bough or homemade

  • 3 tablespoons honey

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • 1 head of broccoli, florets removed

  • 2 cups Gruyere cheese, grated

  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • to taste, salt and ground black pepper

Directions

  • Prepare the Hot Honey Base:
Combine the honey, extra virgin olive oil, and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan. Heat over low heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Blanch the Broccoli:
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and cook for 2-3 minutes until tender. Drain and immediately transfer to an ice bath to stop the cooking process.
  • Preheat the Oven:
Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
  • Assemble the Flatbread:
Roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness and shape. Transfer to a baking sheet or a pizza stone. Brush the dough with the prepared hot honey mixture, spreading it evenly across the surface. Evenly distribute the blanched broccoli florets over the dough. Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese on top.
  • Bake:
Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Make the Balsamic Glaze:
In a small saucepan, combine the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the mixture thickens into a glaze. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Finish and Serve:
Remove the flatbread from the oven and drizzle the balsamic glaze over the top. Season with salt and ground black pepper to taste. Slice the flatbread and serve warm.
