Whiskey Spiked Gala Apple Cider with Maple Foam

Jump to Recipe

Whiskey Spiked Gala Apple Cider, where the comforting warmth of homemade cider meets the sophisticated kick of whiskey and the luxurious sweetness of maple, is a beverage that not only tantalizes the taste buds but also encapsulates the essence of fall and winter in a mug.

This tasty drink starts with the foundation of homemade apple cider, crafted from a selection of Gala apples, renowned for their mildly sweet and nuanced flavor. The process of making the cider is a labor of love and patience. The apples are quartered and submerged in water, simmered gently with a mélange of spices – cinnamon sticks imparting a warm, spicy aroma, whole cloves adding depth, and allspice berries contributing a subtle complexity. The addition of orange introduces a citrusy brightness that elevates the cider’s flavor profile. As the mixture simmers, the kitchen fills with a comforting aroma that is quintessentially autumnal, a reminder of crisp leaves underfoot and the cool embrace of fall air.

The process of straining the cooked apples through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth is a transformative moment, yielding a rich, amber-hued liquid that is the very essence of the apples and spices. The cider, now imbued with the flavors of fall, is a delightful drink in its own right, but when spiked with whiskey, it enters a realm of sophisticated warmth. The whiskey, with its notes of vanilla, caramel, and a hint of smokiness, blends seamlessly with the sweet and spiced cider. This fusion creates a harmonious balance – the boldness of the whiskey is tempered by the natural sweetness of the Gala apples, while the spices in the cider are given a new dimension by the complexities of the whiskey.

The final crowning glory of this beverage is the maple foam topping. This element introduces a touch of elegance and a burst of flavor. Heavy cream, whipped to perfection, becomes a soft, airy foam, the ideal vehicle for the rich, sweet, and earthy flavors of maple syrup. The addition of vanilla extract to the foam adds a layer of aromatic sweetness, and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg can add an extra hint of spice. This maple foam, when spooned over the warm, spiked cider, creates a visually stunning and texturally delightful contrast. The cool, creamy foam slowly melting into the hot cider offers a moment of sensory delight.

Each sip of the Spiked Gala Apple Cider with Maple Foam Topping is a journey through flavors and sensations. The warm, spiced cider and the smooth, potent kick of the whiskey are first to greet the palate, followed by the sweet, luxurious embrace of the maple foam. The drink is more than a beverage; it’s a celebration of seasonal flavors, a comforting embrace in the colder months, and a testament to the art of combining simple ingredients to create something extraordinary.

This beverage, perfect for savoring beside a crackling fire or under a blanket of stars on a cool night, embodies the spirit of the season. It’s a drink that brings people together, offering warmth, comfort, and a touch of indulgence. So here’s a toast to the beauty of fall and winter.

Whiskey Spiked Gala Apple Cider is a sumptuous and warming autumnal drink, combining the sweet richness of homemade Gala apple cider and smooth whiskey, crowned with a luxurious, velvety maple foam.

Ingredients

  • 12 gala apples, quartered

  • 1 navel orange, quartered

  • 3 sticks of cinnamon

  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves

  • 1 tablespoon allspice

  • 1 whole vanilla bean

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1 cup whiskey

  • For the Maple Foam Topping
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  • Make the Homemade Apple Cider:
Quarter the apples and orange. There’s no need to remove peels or seeds. Place them in a large pot and add enough water to cover them. Add cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, allspice berries, and vanilla bean. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the top.

Bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the temperature to a simmer. Cook for 2 hours. Mash the apples with a potato masher or spoon to extract as much flavor as possible throughout the cooking process. Strain the apple mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a large pot or container.
  • Spike the Cider:
With the homemade cider still warm, stir in the whiskey. Adjust the amount according to how strong you want the drink. Taste and adjust the sweetness or strength as needed.
  • Prepare the Maple Cream Foam Topping:
For the best results, chill your bowl and beaters in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes before you begin. In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  • Serve:
Pour the spiked cider into mugs. Top each mug with a generous dollop of the maple cream foam. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top of the foam.
