Jump to Recipe

Yuca Fritters with Zesty Horseradish Dipping Sauce is a delightful fusion of crunchy, savory fritters and a tangy, spicy dipping sauce. These fritters, crafted from yuca (also known as cassava), boast a texture and flavor that are genuinely unique, setting them apart from traditional potato-based fritters.

Yuca, a Latin American and Caribbean cuisine staple, is renowned for its starchy, slightly sweet taste. When paired with a bold, flavorful horseradish dipping sauce, these fritters create a delicious appetizer or snack bound to pique your interest.

Yuca is a root vegetable that is naturally gluten-free and rich in carbohydrates, making it an excellent base for fritters. Once boiled and mashed, the yuca is combined with grated onion, eggs, and a blend of seasonings like garlic powder and black pepper to create a savory fritter batter. A bit of flour and baking soda help the fritters hold together and get that perfect golden-brown crunch when fried. Cooking the yuca until tender before mashing ensures a smooth, starchy texture that crisps up beautifully in hot oil.

The zesty horseradish dipping sauce is what truly sets these yuca fritters apart. A combination of creamy mayonnaise and sour cream provides the base, while freshly grated horseradish brings a sharp, spicy kick that complements the richness of the fritters. Adding chili oil and sriracha adds a smoky heat balanced by the tang of freshly squeezed lime juice. Fish sauce provides an umami depth, while a touch of honey brings just the right amount of sweetness to round out the flavors.

The result is a bold, zesty, and creamy sauce with a delightful balance of heat and acidity. This dipping sauce enhances the savory fritters and adds a refreshing contrast, making every bite an explosion of flavor. The spicy horseradish dip works well not only with yuca fritters but can also be paired with other fried appetizers or vegetables.

Yuca Fritters with Zesty Horseradish Dipping Sauce is a versatile dish that can be served as an appetizer, snack, or side dish. Whether you’re preparing them for a casual gathering or an elevated dinner party, these fritters will surely be a hit. They offer a satisfying crunch with a soft, flavorful center, and the zesty dipping sauce provides the perfect flavor punch to keep you returning for more. Easy to prepare and packed with flavor, these fritters are a great way to showcase yuca’s unique taste and texture. Serve these crispy fritters with the zesty horseradish dipping sauce on the side for a crowd-pleasing dish sure to impress!

Ingredients

  • For the Yuca Fritters:
  • 3 yuca, peeled and chopped

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 small onion, grated

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • for frying, vegetable oil

  • For the Zesty Horseradish Dipping Sauce:
  • 2 tablespoons horseradish, freshly grated

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 1 clove of garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoons chili oil

  • 1 tablespoon sriracha

  • 1 tablespoon lime juice, freshly squeezed

  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • to taste, salt and pepper

Directions

  • Mix the Zesty Horseradish Dipping Sauce:
Whisk together the freshly grated horseradish, mayonnaise, sour cream, minced garlic, chili oil, sriracha, lime juice, fish sauce, and honey. Season with salt and ground black pepper to taste. Cover the sauce and refrigerate while you prepare the fritters, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Prepare the Yuca:
Place the chopped yuca in a large pot, cover it with water, and bring it to a boil. Cook for 20-30 minutes, or until the yuca is tender. Drain and allow it to cool slightly. Once the yuca has cooled enough to handle, remove the fibrous core from each piece and mash the yuca until smooth.
  • Mix the Fritter Batter:
Combine the mashed yuca, grated onion, beaten eggs, flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and baking soda in a large bowl. Mix until everything is well incorporated and the batter is thick.
  • Fry the Fritters:
Heat 1″-2″ of vegetable oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Once the oil is hot, fry the yuca fritters in batches until golden brown and crispy, 5-6 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Serve:
Plate the crispy yuca fritters with a side of or a drizzle of the zesty horseradish dipping sauce. Garnish with fresh cilantro.
