This one-pan orzo skillet recipe delivers bold, restaurant-quality flavor with minimal cleanup and maximum satisfaction. Perfect for busy weeknight dinners, this easy pasta skillet combines smoky sausage, caramelized roasted broccoli, and sun-dried tomatoes in a rich, cheesy finish that’s impressive enough for entertaining guests.

Why This One-Pan Orzo Recipe Works

The beauty of this skillet orzo recipe lies in its layered approach to building flavor. Every ingredient serves a purpose, creating a harmonious balance of textures and tastes that transforms simple pantry staples into an extraordinary meal.

At the heart of this dish is premium smoked sausage, browned until golden and deeply savory. This isn’t just protein but the flavor foundation that brings heat, richness, and meaty backbone to every single bite. The rendered fat from browning creates the perfect base for building the rest of the dish.

Roasted broccoli elevates this one-pan pasta recipe from ordinary to exceptional. Cooked until crisp-tender with beautifully charred edges, the broccoli develops a nutty, caramelized flavor that adds both visual appeal and nutritional value. The contrast between the sausage’s richness and the broccoli’s subtle bitterness creates complexity that keeps you coming back for more.

Key Ingredients That Make the Difference

Sun-dried tomatoes are the secret weapon in this easy orzo skillet. These concentrated flavor bombs punch through with intense sweetness and umami, scattered strategically throughout the dish so you discover their burst of flavor in perfect proportions. They bridge the gap between the smoky sausage and earthy broccoli with Mediterranean flair.

The orzo itself receives special treatment. It’s toasted first in the rendered sausage fat until golden, then slowly simmered in rich chicken broth. This technique creates a naturally creamy texture without heavy cream, allowing the pasta to absorb maximum flavor while maintaining the perfect al dente bite.

A carefully balanced blend of oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes infuses the entire skillet with aromatic, herby warmth and just enough heat to awaken your palate. These Mediterranean flavors transform the dish from simple comfort food into something memorable and crave-worthy.

The Perfect Cheesy Finish

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, stirred in during the final moments of cooking, creates a glossy, savory coating that unifies every component. This isn’t just melted cheese—it’s a silky sauce that clings to each piece of orzo, ensuring every forkful delivers the perfect balance of flavors and textures.

Endless Customization Options

This versatile one-pan dinner recipe adapts beautifully to your preferences and what’s available in your kitchen. Swap the smoked sausage for spicy andouille or Italian sausage for different flavor profiles. Prefer a milder dish? Choose sweet Italian sausage instead.

Cheese lovers can experiment with pecorino Romano for a sharper, saltier finish, or blend multiple cheeses for added complexity. For extra indulgence, stir in a splash of heavy cream or crème fraîche just before serving.

The roasted broccoli, however, deserves to stay. Its contribution to both flavor and nutrition makes this dish feel balanced and complete.

Perfect for Any Occasion

Whether you’re cooking for family on a Tuesday night or hosting friends for casual entertaining, this easy skillet meal delivers consistent results with minimal effort. The entire dish comes together in one pan, reducing cleanup time and maximizing flavor development.

Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or basil to brighten the rich flavors, or add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for acidity that cuts through the richness.

Comforting, bold, and built to satisfy, this one-pan orzo with sausage and broccoli is a dinner recipe worth adding to your regular rotation.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced

  • 2 cups orzo pasta

  • 2 cups broccoli florets

  • 1 medium onion, diced

  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 tablespoon oregano, freshly chopped

  • 1 tablespoon basil, freshly chopped

  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • 4 cups chicken broth

  • 1 1/2 cups Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

  • to taste, salt and ground black pepper

Directions

  • Roast the Broccoli:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Cut broccoli into small florets. Toss with extra virgin olive oil and salt. Spread on a baking sheet and roast for 20–25 minutes, until crispy at the edges and tender inside.
  • Brown the Sausage:
In a large skillet or pan, heat the extra virgin olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced smoked sausage and brown them for about 5-7 minutes. Remove the browned sausage from the skillet and set them aside.
  • Sauté Onions and Garlic:
In the same skillet, add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the onions become translucent.
  • Toast the Orzo:
Add the orzo pasta to the skillet and toast it for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently until the orzo turns slightly golden.
  • Add Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Spices:
Stir in the chopped sun-dried tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Pour in the Broth:
Pour in the chicken broth and season with a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Stir to combine all the ingredients.
  • Simmer:
Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10-12 minutes, until the orzo is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Combine Ingredients:
Once the orzo is cooked to your liking and the liquid is mostly absorbed, return the browned sausage and roasted broccoli to the skillet. Stir in about half of the grated Parmesan cheese, reserving some for garnish. Mix everything together until the cheese is melted and the dish is well combined.
  • Garnish and Serve:
If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves and a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese. Serve your Smoked Sausage and Sun-Dried Tomato Orzo Skillet hot.
