Darker n’ Stormier Cocktail

Jump to Recipe

A classic drink – the Dark n’ Stormy – is kicked up a notch with the addition of Fernet, a wonderfully robust spirit from the amaro family. The Dark n’ Stormy is the “unofficial” drink of Bermuda, an island nation steeped in British history. Sometime after WWI, British Naval officers popularized the combination of Gosling’s dark rum and ginger beer. Eventually, that recipe made it’s way across the pond to the United States, and the rest is history. In 1991, Gosling Brother’s Ltd. won two trademarks on the recipe for a Dark n’ Stormy. That’s a big deal because there’s only a handful of cocktails protected in the same way.

For that reason, and technically speaking, there’s only one legal way to make a Dark n’ Stormy. Fortunately, you can make my Darker n’ Stormier recipe free of any legal ramifications. And, what makes it darker and stormier? Fernet. The herbaceous and spicy flavors of Fernet pair well with the classic combination of dark rum, ginger beer, and lime.

What is a Dark n’ Stormy cocktail?

A Dark ‘n’ Stormy is a classic cocktail that originated in Bermuda and has gained popularity worldwide. It is a simple yet delicious drink that combines dark rum, ginger beer, and a splash of lime. Here’s a description of the Dark ‘n’ Stormy:

  • Ingredients: The main ingredients of a Dark ‘n’ Stormy are dark rum and ginger beer. Dark rum, typically a black or dark brown variety, is preferred for its rich and robust flavor. Ginger beer, a carbonated beverage with a strong ginger flavor, provides a spicy and refreshing kick. A squeeze of lime juice is often added to balance the sweetness and add a hint of citrus.
  • Preparation: To make a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, start by filling a tall glass with ice cubes. Add a measure of dark rum, typically around 2 ounces, to the glass. Next, pour in ginger beer, filling the glass almost to the top. Squeeze in the juice of half a lime or adjust to taste. Stir gently to mix the ingredients together.
  • Presentation: The Dark ‘n’ Stormy is typically served in a highball or Collins glass, showcasing its golden-brown color. The cocktail may have a layered appearance due to the contrast between the dark rum and the lighter ginger beer. Garnish options can include a wedge of lime or a lime wheel placed on the rim of the glass.
  • Taste: The Dark ‘n’ Stormy is a harmonious blend of flavors. The dark rum brings depth and complexity, with notes of caramel, molasses, and spices. The ginger beer adds a zingy and slightly spicy kick, which is balanced by the sweetness of the rum. The lime juice cuts through the sweetness, providing a tangy and refreshing element.

The Dark ‘n’ Stormy is known for its smooth yet invigorating taste, making it a popular choice for those seeking a flavorful and easy-to-make cocktail. It is often enjoyed as a refreshing sipper on a warm day or as a relaxing drink to unwind. As with many classic cocktails, variations and personal preferences can lead to different recipes, but the combination of dark rum and ginger beer remains at the core of the Dark ‘n’ Stormy experience.
