Easy Portuguese-Inspired Dinner

Looking for an exciting twist on chicken burgers? This homemade peri peri chicken burger recipe brings Portuguese and African flavors right to your kitchen with a spicy, flavorful sauce that elevates ground chicken to something extraordinary. Perfect for weeknight dinners or weekend barbecues!

What is Peri Peri Sauce and Why It’s Perfect for Chicken Burgers

Peri peri sauce is a vibrant Portuguese-African condiment that’s gaining popularity across America thanks to restaurants like Nando’s. This bold, spicy sauce originated when Portuguese colonists encountered African Bird’s Eye Chili peppers in southern Africa centuries ago. The name “peri peri” comes from the Swahilian word “pilipili,” meaning pepper.

Traditional peri peri sauce packs serious heat – African Bird’s Eye Chilis are 10-20 times hotter than jalapeños! Our recipe uses dried chipotle peppers for a more approachable but still flavorful alternative that maintains the sauce’s essential character while being family-friendly. The resulting sauce combines smoky, tangy, and spicy notes that transform plain ground chicken into something truly memorable.

How to Make Restaurant-Quality Peri Peri Chicken Burgers at Home

Creating these Portuguese-inspired burgers is surprisingly simple. Start by making the signature peri peri style sauce – a blend of peppers, garlic, citrus, olive oil and spices that creates the perfect balance of heat and flavor. This versatile sauce serves as both a marinade component for the ground chicken mixture and a finishing sauce.

For the burger patties, combine ground chicken with breadcrumbs, garlic, paprika, green onions and a portion of the peri peri sauce. This mixture keeps the burgers moist while infusing them with flavor from the inside out. Pan-frying the patties creates a beautiful golden crust while keeping the interior juicy – a challenge often faced when cooking with lean ground chicken.

The finished burgers deliver an exciting alternative to traditional beef burgers with significantly less fat but no compromise on flavor. Topped with additional peri peri sauce, these burgers offer a taste of Portuguese cuisine that’s becoming increasingly popular as Portugal attracts digital nomads and travelers seeking its beautiful landscapes and affordable lifestyle.

Versatile Peri Peri Sauce: Beyond Just Chicken Burgers

While these chicken burgers showcase peri peri sauce beautifully, this versatile condiment deserves a permanent place in your refrigerator. Once you make a batch, you’ll find countless uses for its bold, complex flavor profile.

Use it as a marinade for traditional Portuguese-style grilled chicken thighs, as a dipping sauce for french fries or roasted vegetables, as a spread for sandwiches, or even as a flavor booster for rice dishes. The sauce keeps well refrigerated for up to two weeks, making it perfect for meal prep and adding instant flavor to multiple dishes.

The combination of acidic elements, oil, herbs, and chilies creates a well-balanced sauce that complements various proteins beyond chicken – try it with shrimp, pork, or even firm fish like salmon for an instant flavor upgrade.

Why Portuguese Cuisine Deserves More Recognition

Portuguese cuisine remains somewhat underrepresented in American food culture despite Portugal’s growing popularity as a destination for travelers and remote workers. The country offers a compelling combination of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and affordability that’s attracting international attention, particularly from digital nomads taking advantage of Portugal’s updated visa programs.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken

  • 4 dried chipotle peppers, rehydrated

  • 1 head of garlic

  • 1 red bell pepper

  • 1 yellow onion

  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar

  • 1 1/2 tablespoon salt

  • 1 1/2 tablespoon ground black pepper

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

  • 1 whole lemon, juiced

  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped

  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, roughly chopped

  • 4 tablespoons paprika

  • 1/4 cup chopped green onion, fresh or dried

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder

  • 1 cup frying oil

  • 4 hamburger buns

  • 4 slices green leaf lettuce

  • 4 slices sliced tomato

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°.
  • To rehydrate the dried peppers: Remove the seeds and stems from the dried peppers. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the seeded and stemless peppers, cover the pot, remove it from the heat, and let sit for 15 minutes.

You don’t have to use dried peppers. You can roast peppers along with the onion, red bell pepper, and garlic in step 4 as a substitute.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, 1/2 tablespoon salt, 1/2 tablespoon pepper, garlic powder, green onion, and 1 tablespoon of paprika. Mix until thoroughly combined. Form into equal sized patties and set aside in the refrigerator.
  • Peel the yellow onion and remove the seeds and stem from the red bell pepper. Drizzle with olive oil. Cut the head off of the garlic, drizzle with olive oil, and wrap tightly in aluminum foil. Roast the garlic, pepper, and onion in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

If you aren’t using dried peppers, roast fresh peppers during this step. Add 3-4 hot peppers of your choice.
  • Once cool enough to handle, add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic to a blender or food processor. Add the following ingredients to create the peri peri style sauce: chipotle peppers (and 1 tablespoon of the water used to rehydrate them), extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, 1 tablespoon salt, 1 tablespoon pepper, 3 tablespoons paprika, lemon juice, cilantro, and basil. Blend well until thoroughly combined. You can’t really over do it, so keep blending if you aren’t sure.
  • Add 1 cup of frying oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once shimmering, add the ground chicken patties. Flatten with a spatula and cook 3-4 minutes on each side. The outside should be golden and crispy.
  • To assemble the burgers, add 1 patty and a dollop of piri piri sauce to a hamburger bun with green leaf lettuce and a couple of slices of tomato.
