Grilled Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese Sandwich

Jump to Recipe

The Grilled Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese Sandwich is a unique culinary creation that harmoniously blends the robust flavors of Spanish cuisine with the comforting familiarity of a classic grilled cheese sandwich.

At the core of this sandwich are two quintessential Spanish delicacies: Serrano ham and Manchego cheese. Serrano ham, renowned for its intense, cured flavor and rich aroma, is a cornerstone of Spanish charcuterie. It is crafted from the hind legs of pigs, salted, and air-dried in natural conditions for a minimum of 12 months. This meticulous process imparts a depth and complexity of flavor that is unmistakably Spanish.

The ham’s savory, salty notes perfectly complement the Manchego cheese’s subtly sweet, nutty flavor. Aged from 60 days to two years, Manchego cheese is crafted in the La Mancha region of Spain from the milk of Manchega sheep. Its firm texture and velvety mouthfeel make it an ideal choice for melting. When heated, it turns delightfully gooey and stringy, perfectly contrasting the grilled bread’s crispness.

The sandwich is built on a foundation of ciabatta rolls, known for their rustic appearance and delightful chewiness. The ciabatta’s airy, open crumb and slightly sour tang come from a long fermentation process, making it the perfect canvas for the rich fillings. Before grilling, the outer surfaces of the ciabatta are lightly buttered, ensuring that each bite has a golden, crispy exterior that gives way to the soft bread within.

A unique twist to this sandwich is the addition of honey, which is drizzled over the Serrano ham before grilling. The sweetness of the honey cuts through the ham’s saltiness and the cheese’s richness, adding a layer of complexity that elevates the sandwich from simply savory to intriguingly sweet and salty. This combination of flavors is delicious and harmonizes beautifully, providing a counterpoint to each decadent bite.

The sandwich is cooked on a medium-hot skillet and gently pressed to ensure that the cheese melts evenly and the ingredients fuse flawlessly. The outcome is a sandwich with a crispy outer shell, warm and melting insides, and a medley of flavors that harmonize with each bite, creating a symphony of taste.

When served, the Grilled Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese Sandwich is cut diagonally, revealing layers of melted cheese and perfectly arranged ham with hints of honey glistening under the light. It’s a simple presentation that belies the complex array of flavors contained within.

Ideal for a luxurious lunch, a quick yet sophisticated dinner, or even cut into smaller portions for an elegant appetizer, this sandwich is versatile. It pairs wonderfully with a light arugula salad, a cup of tomato soup, or alongside a glass of Spanish red wine, which complements the rich flavors of the ham and cheese.

The Grilled Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese Sandwich is a tribute to the simplicity and elegance of Spanish ingredients, brought together in a familiar and excitingly different format. It’s a culinary journey to Spain, no passport required, and a testament to the pleasures of international cuisine made accessible through the humble sandwich.

The Grilled Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese Sandwich combines savory Spanish ham and nutty Manchego cheese with a sweet touch of honey, all encased in a crispy, buttered ciabatta roll for a luxurious and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 2 ciabatta rolls, split in half

  • 6 slices of 6 Serrano ham

  • 4 ounces 4 Manchego cheese, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons 2 honey

  • 2 tablespoons 2 unsalted butter

Directions

  • Prepare the Sandwich:
Lay the ciabatta rolls open on a clean surface. Spread a thin layer of butter on the outside of each ciabatta half. On the bottom halves of the ciabatta, arrange a layer of Manchego cheese, covering the bread evenly. Top the cheese with Serrano ham slices. Drizzle honey over the ham slices.
  • Grill the Sandwich:
Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich on the skillet. Press down with a spatula or place another heavy skillet on top of the sandwich to compress it slightly. Grill the sandwich until the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Serve:
Remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it sit for a minute before cutting. This rest period helps the cheese set slightly, making the sandwich easier to cut. Slice the sandwich diagonally and serve immediately.
