Southern Comfort Pulled Pork Sandwich

Jump to Recipe

The Southern Comfort Pork Sandwich is a culinary embodiment of comfort and simplicity, bringing together a symphony of flavors that resonate with the warmth of Southern hospitality. At its heart lies the succulent, shredded braised pork butt roast, tenderly cooked until it reaches a melt-in-your-mouth consistency. This pork, known for its rich marbling and depth of flavor, becomes the star of the sandwich, offering a taste that is both robust and subtly nuanced, thanks to the slow braising process that infuses every fiber of the meat with a complex blend of spices and aromatics.

Nestled atop the bed of warm, tender pork is a generous spoonful of Vidalia onion relish. This relish, with its sweet and tangy profile, is made from the famously mild Vidalia onions, cultivated in the unique soil of Georgia. The relish adds a layer of sweetness that perfectly complements the savory pork, creating a delightful contrast that elevates the sandwich from simple to sublime. The Vidalia onion, with its distinct flavor profile, acts as a bridge between the hearty pork and the other components of the sandwich, ensuring each bite is a harmonious blend of flavors.

Adding a crunchy contrast to the tender pork and sweet relish are the bread and butter pickles. These pickles, known for their crisp texture and distinctive sweet-and-sour taste, introduce an element of zesty brightness to the sandwich. The acidity of the pickles cuts through the richness of the pork, providing a refreshing bite that balances the overall flavor profile. The inclusion of bread and butter pickles is a nod to traditional Southern cuisine, where pickles are often served as a counterpoint to rich, savory dishes.

The foundation of this delectable assembly is two slices of white bread, lightly toasted to golden perfection. The bread, with its buttery, crisp exterior and soft interior, acts as the ideal vessel for the sandwich’s fillings, providing structure and a satisfying crunch with each bite. The act of toasting the bread not only enhances its texture but also its flavor, adding a subtle nuttiness that complements the other components.

Bringing all these elements together is a spread of plain mayonnaise on each slice of bread. The mayonnaise, with its creamy texture and mild flavor, acts as a canvas, allowing the flavors of the pork, relish, and pickles to shine. It adds a moistness to the sandwich, ensuring that each bite is as satisfying as it is delicious. The simplicity of plain mayonnaise is key here, providing a subtle richness without overshadowing the other ingredients.

The Southern Comfort Pork Sandwich is a testament to the power of simple, high-quality ingredients coming together in perfect harmony. Each component, from the braised pork to the Vidalia onion relish, the bread and butter pickles, and the toasted white bread, plays a crucial role in creating a sandwich that is both comforting and sophisticated. This sandwich is a celebration of flavors and textures, a culinary journey through the heart of Southern cuisine, and a reminder of the simple pleasures that come from a meal prepared with care and intention.

The Southern Comfort Pork Sandwich artfully combines tender shredded braised pork, sweet Vidalia onion relish, crisp bread and butter pickles, and creamy mayonnaise between slices of perfectly toasted white bread, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices 2 white bread, lightly toasted

  • 1 cup 1 succulent braised pork butt roast

  • 3 tablespoons 3 Vidalia onion relish

  • 5 slices of 5 bread and butter pickles

  • 2 tablespoons 2 mayonnaise

  • for toasting, unsalted butter

Directions

  • Toast the Bread:
Lightly butter both sides of the white bread slices. Toast them in a skillet or in a hot oven until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Set aside on a plate.
  • Spread the Mayonnaise:
Spread a tablespoon of plain mayonnaise on one side of a toasted bread slice. The mayonnaise will add a creamy texture and subtly enhance the flavors of the other ingredients.
  • Layer the Pork:
On one slice of the toasted bread (mayo side up), evenly distribute the warm, shredded braised pork butt roast. The warmth of the pork will slightly melt the mayonnaise, blending the flavors beautifully.
  • Place the Pickles:
Arrange the bread and butter pickles on top of the onion relish, adding a zesty and crunchy contrast to the tender pork and sweet relish.
  • Add Vidalia Onion Relish:
Spoon the Vidalia onion relish over the shredded pork. The relish brings a delightful sweetness and tanginess that complements the savory pork perfectly.
  • Close and Serve:
Place the second slice of toasted bread on top, mayo side down, to complete the sandwich. Press gently to ensure the sandwich holds together well.

Serve immediately and savor the combination of tender braised pork, sweet Vidalia onion relish, crisp pickles, and creamy mayonnaise, all sandwiched between two slices of crispy toasted bread.
